E Certificate Information


There is an E Certificate Workbook available from the shop, but verbal responses and demonstration of skills are also appropriate ways to assess the candidates.


Minimum Age

  • less than Seven years

Certificate & Badge Colour

  • Pale Blue


  • None


  • The objectives of the E Certificate are to gain confidence in riding and handling a pony.
  • To be keen to improve and learn.

Learning Outcomes


  • Mounting & Dismounting (mounting block may be used)
  • Being legged up.
  • Capable of starting, guiding and stopping the pony and riding at the walk and trot
  • Participate in simple mounted games and rider exercises

Horse Handling

  • Approach, catch and lead a quiet pony under supervision
  • Let the pony go in the paddock

Horse Care

  • Candidate to indentify and know the use of grooming tools
  • Know the parts of saddle and bridle
  • Know what a pony needs in it's paddock to make it comfortable
  • Know what a pony eats and drinks

General Knowledge

  • Identify parts of a horse
  • Identify colours and markings
  • Know how to wipe dust and mud off saddle and clean the bit



  • In order to pass the E Certificate the candidate must be competent in the learning outcomes outlined above.
